Feel the Need for Speed On Ice at Speed Skating Day at The 2018 Great New York State Fair

The Fastest Sport on Ice Takes Place is Part of Programming on Rink in New Exposition Center

The speed and grace of speed skating will take over the ice rink at the Great New York State Fair’s new Exposition Center on Wednesday, August 29 for a day-long event open to everyone from the speediest skaters to the youngest novices. Syracuse Speed Skating Club will run the day of races. Registration is free and open to all skaters. The registration form can be found here. Participants receive admission for themselves and their families, along with a parking pass.

Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each race:

  • A Novice Meet for beginners and those with some experience, ages 3 -11;
  • An Experienced Meet for skaters ages 5 to Masters, for the top competitive speed skaters;
  • A Relay Meet for two groups for skaters ages 5 to12 and 13 to Masters; and
  • The Fastest Speed Skater in New York competition, a single-elimination event to crown the speediest skater in each age group.

“This is just the latest event to join our roster of exciting competitions and exhibitions in our temporary ice rink this year. Speed skating is so cool to watch during the Olympics so I’m genuinely excited to see our visitors try their hand at this sport, how fast people can go on skates and I know lots of other fairgoers will be, as well,” said Troy Waffner, Acting Fair Director.

The Fair is erecting a temporary ice rink inside the brand-new Exposition Center to inaugurate the new facility, which will be the largest events space north of New York City between Boston and Cleveland.  The rink will host a variety of exciting ice-related events, such as hockey, broomball, curling, figure skating and speed skating.
