Hockey’s Hanson Brothers to Meet Fans, Attend Screening of Hockey’s Most Famous Movie, “Slap Shot”

The Hanson Brothers may be the most famous fictional hockey players in the history of the game. They were the trio of enforcers brought in to help the Charlestown Chiefs semi-pro hockey team in the 1976 movie “Slap Shot,” which starred Paul Newman. Scenes for the film were shot in Syracuse, Utica and Clinton, and now, two of the Hanson Brothers will return to the area for an appearance and screening of the film Friday night, August 31 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the ice rink in the Exposition Center at the Great New York State Fair. There is no cost to attend.

Steve Carlson and Dave Hanson, who both played hockey professionally, will talk briefly about the movie starting at 6:30 p.m. The film will be shown on a large screen at one end of the ice rink at 7 p.m. and attendees are welcome to skate as they watch the movie. After the movie, Carlson and Hanson will take questions from the audience, with time at the end for a meet-and-greet with fairgoers. The film tells the story of a hockey team’s last season, in which the coach decides to go for broke by bringing in three enforcers – the Hanson Brothers – and playing a particularly violent style of hockey. Fans love it and the team makes it to the league championship against the Syracuse Chiefs.

“We are incredibly excited to have Steve and Dave here this year. ‘Slap Shot’ is a movie nearly every hockey fan knows and it gives us a chance to celebrate the movie’s local roots. This is going to be a really fun evening,” said Troy Waffner, Acting Fair Director.
