State Fair and Centro Announce Additional Transportation Efforts for Fair’s Final Weekend, 2020 Fair

Take The Bus

Centro will add 12 buses to its fleet beginning today to provide service during what are  historically the busiest days of the Great New York State Fair. The buses are being provided by the Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority. Centro will also bring in drivers from its Utica operation and from Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit to augment its local driving staff. Centro operates Park-N-Ride lots to provide convenient access to the Fair and operates shuttles in the Fair’s Orange and Willis Ave. parking lots.

“The Fair, Centro and State Police have worked closely this past week to see how our new traffic patterns are working. I have also spent a great deal of time at Gate 10 and riding our trams to talk to fairgoers to hear their ideas and concerns. We take all of it seriously and are making changes now and will make more in time for the 2020 Fair. We never stop trying to improve,” said Troy Waffner, Fair Director.

The changes come as the Fair prepares for the busiest days of its 13-day annual event. Attendance on the weekends often tops 100,000 per day, making maximum use of the approximately 15,300 spaces available in the Fair’s six public parking lots and the approximately 7,400 spaces available in Centro’s fair time Park-N-Ride lots.

The Fair and State Police have already made changes to bus access patterns along State Fair Blvd. and in the Gray Lot to improve efficiency. In addition, Centro shifted the start time of its shuttle at the Willis Ave. lot to better match the lot’s operating hours. More and larger signage was also installed along State Fair Blvd. to assist drivers in finding the new accessible parking area in the Pink Lot. The Fair is planning to create several hundred more accessible spaces in the Gray Lot after this year’s Fair as it reconfigures the new bus depot to optimize space. The Fair also plans to lease a second plot of open land along State Fair Blvd. from Honeywell Corp. for next year’s Fair, adding more than 1,000 spaces adjacent to the current Willis Ave. lot.

Founded in 1841, the Great New York State Fair is America’s third largest state fair. The Fair showcases the best of New York agriculture, provides top-quality entertainment and is a key piece of Governor Cuomo’s CNY Rising strategy of growing the Central New York economy through tourism. Fair attendance is up more than 40% since the beginning of more than $120 million in investments, with 1.27 million people attending the Fair in 2018. The 2019 Fair runs from August 21 to September 2. Information about the Fair can be found here.

The New York State Fairgrounds is a 375-acre exhibit and entertainment complex that operates all year. A year-round schedule of events is available here.
