Third Day, Thursday, August 30, 2018 Allows Seniors to Enjoy the Fair on a Cooler Day
With the heat index predicted to head towards 100 early this week, the 2018 Great New York State Fair will extend its annual Senior Days to a third day of free attendance for adults age 60 and older. The third day, Thursday, August 30, is intended to allow seniors to enjoy the traditional free day at the Fair on a day when the heat is expected to be lower.
“High heat and humidity can be troublesome for everyone, but particularly for seniors. We are happy to offer an extra day of free admission to make sure our senior fairgoers get to enjoy a fun—and safe—day at the Fair,” said Troy Waffner, Acting Fair Director.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures on Tuesday, the second of two Senior Days, to peak at 90 degrees. The heat index, which factors in humidity to come up with a measure of how hot it feels, is predicted to go above 100 degrees. On days such as those, it is critical to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade as much as possible.
The Fair is purchasing additional misting stations to provide a cool spray of water for all fairgoers. The Fair also reminds people that they can bring water bottles from home and keep them filled for free at water filling stations available in most buildings on the Fairgrounds.
Fairgoers should call 911 or immediately approach any State Trooper or Fair employee if someone shows signs or symptoms of heat illness, including:
- Headache
- Light headedness
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea
- Vomiting For more information on how to stay safe during periods of excessive heat, click here.
