Family Fishing Day - "I Fish New York"

A day dedicated to fishing in New York State begins on Aug. 27 with a tournament on Onondaga Lake. “I Fish New York,” sponsored by I LOVE NEW YORK, will feature members of Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) chapters from across the state, competing for the biggest catch from 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. The action then shifts to the new New York Experience area on the Fairgrounds for the official weigh-in and the crowning of the champion on the Empire Experience Stage. Meantime, the Department of Environmental Conservation will host a free fishing experience from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the New York Experience Area pond. Kids of all ages and anglers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. B.A.S.S. boats will be on display in the area, along with various types of fishing gear and equipment. The I LOVE NEW YORK traveling POD will also be there, offering travel tips and recommendations for planning a New York State getaway.

Admission to the Fair on Aug. 27 is free for those who show a valid sporting license at the gate. Attendees are also encouraged to stop by the DEC Pavilion to purchase their hunting or fishing license. Anyone who buys a sporting license at the fair will be automatically entered into a random drawing to win a Great New York State Fair lifetime pass.

Law Enforcement Day • Senior Citizen's Day • Wade Shows Midway Monday

  • Law Enforcement Day

Law Enforcement Day allows free admission to any active or retired law enforcement or corrections personnel who presents a badge and/or picture ID from the department from which they are or were employed. Make sure to attend the Law Enforcement Day ceremonies at 12:00pm in front of the Horticulture Building and make sure to see all the law enforcement participants in our Special Day Parade at 6:00pm.


  • Senior Citizen’s Day

Senior citizens, sixty (60) years of age and older, are offered free admission on this day of the Fair. ID showing date of birth may be requested to allow free admittance.

There is a new reception area for senior group bus and van parking, thus a special parking permit for this location will be required. Please contact the Art & Home Center office at (315) 487-7711 ext. 1265 to pre-register for this permit.

Fairgoers are able to make use of the Fair’s free internal tram network with the service running 9:00am-8:00pm. These trams travel around the perimeter road, stopping at 11 scheduled stops.


  • Wade Shows Midway Monday

Special limited wristband offer, 10 rides for only $10.00. Wristbands can be purchased at any Wade Shows ticket booth on the midway. Wristbands are not shareable.

Fire & Rescue Day • Beef Day • Senior Citizen's Day

  • Fire & Rescue Day

Fire & Rescue Day allows for free admission to any active or retired member of a fire department or emergency services organization who has a duly issued picture ID from that department or organization. Make sure to attend the Fire & Rescue Day ceremonies at 11:00am in front of the Horticulture Building and make sure to see all the fire & rescue participants in our Special Day Parade at 6:00pm.


  • Beef Day

“Beef, it’s What’s for Dinner”! Follow your nose to the Chevy Court pavilion to starts the day’s great activities by watching as local media personalities try their hand at becoming the “Branding Iron Chef” in the “Branding Iron Cook-off” media grilling contest beginning at 10:00am. At 12:30pm New York State FFA Chapters will take over as they compete in the 11th Annual “Create the Perfect Burger” contest sponsored by the New York Beef Council and Tops Markets.  Eleven NYS FFA Chapters will grill head to head as a panel of judges will determine who will take home the title for not only the “Perfect Burger” but $875 worth of prizes for their school chapter!  After the competitions, plan a trip to the Beef Barn where a host of fun, interactive activities will entertain and educate you about beef from farm to fork! (i.e. scavenger hunts, beef cut puzzle and beef personality quizzes).

Women's Day • sponsored by St. Joseph’s Health

Special Fair Days 1Plan on attending the annual Women’s Day Luncheon, sponsored by St. Joseph’s Health, plus many other special events throughout the day. Highlights include the Fine Arts and Photo Exhibition in the Art & Home Center as well as judging in the Culinary Arts area.

The 2017 Women’s Day Luncheon will take place in the Art and Home Center’s Empire Room at noon.  A reservation is required for the luncheon and seating is limited so registering as soon as possible is recommended. The cost is $20.00, which will cover the luncheon, a fair pass and parking. More information is available by calling 315-487-7711 ext. 1265.

 

The Art and Home Center will open at 10 a.m. on Women’s Day. In addition, a mini-fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Chevy Court and will feature many advocacy groups for women. Feel free to stop by to discuss and ask questions and make sure to see all the Women’s Day participants in our Special Day Parade at 6:00pm.

Armed Forces Day • Dairy Day • $3 Thursday

  • Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day allows free admission to any active duty or veteran with military identification (Military ID Card, form DD-214 or NYS Driver License, Learner Permit or non-driver ID card with a veteran designation). Make sure to attend the Armed Forces Day ceremonies at 11:00am at the Veterans Memorial. Join the State Fair community as we honor and give tribute to all members of our Armed Forces. Make sure to see all the Armed Forces participants in our Special Day Parade at 6:00pm.


  • Dairy Day

This is the State Fair’s way of saying thank you to all the dairy farmers, dairy product processors and manufacturers who provide us with the state’s official beverage, “Milk” and official Snack “Yogurt!”  Come enjoy the local celebrity milkshake contest and other fun activities during the day.  Join later on for the Special Day Parade at 6:00pm.  Be sure to stop by the Dairy Product Building  and visit with State Dairy Princesses, enjoy a cup of cold white or chocolate milk at the State Fair Milk Bar and get a picture of the famous butter sculpture.

Grange Day • Timber Sports & Forestry Day

This day marks the achievements of the NYS Grange organization supporting and advocating for rural communities and agriculture.


  • Timber Sports & Forestry Day

The Sept. 2 event in the New York Experience Area will be a day of exciting events highlighting the state’s forestry industry. A draft horse demonstration begins the day at 10:30 a.m. Collegiate timber sports teams from SUNY-ESF, SUNY Morrisville and Paul Smiths College will compete in events including crosscut and bowsaw, axe throw, underhand chop, logrolling, speed climbing, and more. There will be an opportunity to meet professional lumberjacks, courtesy of the New York State Woodsmen’s Field Days of Boonville. Young people can explore careers in forestry while adults can learn about some threats to trees. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill school district’s Future Farmers of America chapter will be on hand with samples of real maple syrup and an exhibit on maple farming.

Events in the New York Experience area on the west end of the grounds are easily accessible via the Fair’s free, continuous trams, which are sponsored by Chevrolet.

Labor Day • Summer Send Off "Dollar Day"

Labor Day is to honor those working women and men who make America strong. Supporters of labor can meet at 10:00 a.m. near Gate 4 and then at 10:30 a.m. they will march to Chevy Court for a Labor Day rally.


  • Summer Send Off “Dollar Day”

     – Adult admission to the Fair will be $1.00 per person all day.

     – All of the rides in the Wade Shows Midway will be $1.00 per ride.

     – We’ll light up the night and say farewell to the Fair at dusk, right after the final Chevy Court concert of the year at 6:00pm.

     – Fair Parking will still cost $5.00
