Harriet May Mills (1857-1935) of Syracuse, NY, was one of the prime workers in the New York State suffrage movement from the final years of the 19th century until her death in 1935. Inspired by early suffragist Lucy Stone, mentored by Susan B. Anthony, regarded as a valued colleague and leader by the most prominent suffragists of the early 20th century, and befriended by Eleanor Roosevelt, Mills worked tirelessly for the right of women to be not only voters, but active participants in the political process. In 1934, the women’s pavilion on the grounds of the New York State Fairgrounds was dedicated as the Harriet May Mills Women’s Building.
On August 28, 2024, at noon, Miss Mills (portrayed by living-historian Renee Noelle Felice) will appear at the Empire Theater to talk about the crucial role she and her many colleagues played in the latter years of the suffrage campaign that lasted for over seventy years.
